About me
Born in 1969 in the charming coastal city of Alappuzha, Kerala, Madhu Vasudevan is the youngest of five children of P. Vasudevan and M.P. Karthiyayani. His father, a classical music enthusiast and active participant in the communist party’s progressive dramas, deeply influenced Madhu's early years. His mother, a devoted reader, introduced him to the world of literature, sparking a lifelong passion. Starting with modest beginnings, Madhu received his primary education at Polabhagam J.B. School, a government institution in rural Alappuzha. His artistic talents flourished during his childhood as he studied drawing, painting, and portraiture at Apsara School of Arts. He furthered his education at the prestigious SDV Boys High School.
Exceptionally energetic about writting
Madhu Vasudevan graduated with distinction from S.D. College, renowned for its rich tradition, as a Kerala University Rank holder in Hindi Literature. He began his Master’s degree at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, and later transferred to Cochin University of Science and Technology. Under the guidance of esteemed professors, including Dr. P.V. Vijayan, Dr. Ramachandra Dev, Dr. Ramanan Nair, and Dr. A. Aravindakshan, he excelled in his postgraduate studies.
In 1995, Madhu earned his PhD for his research on 'Journalism and Cultural Values in Little Magazines in Hindi,' supervised by Professor A. Aravindakshan, a distinguished writer and former Pro Vice Chancellor of Wardha Central University. He also obtained two postgraduate diplomas in Journalism and Translation Studies and completed his Bachelor of Education degree at the College of Teacher Education in Calicut.
During his seven years as a student at Cochin University of Science and Technology, Madhu Vasudevan was deeply engaged in a wide array of cultural initiatives. He played a pivotal role in organizing SPIC MACAY programs on campus and served as the Secretary of SAMSKARA, a cultural organization that united the CUSAT community, including staff, teachers, and students, to coordinate and execute a variety of cultural events. Additionally, he held the position of Secretary for the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, CUSAT chapter, and was an active member of its district committee.
While pursuing his Bachelor of Education in Kozhikode, Madhu was profoundly influenced by the city’s dynamic cultural environment. He received significant encouragement from esteemed figures such as K.C. Narayanan, Editor of Bhashaposhini Magazine, Dr. K.M. Venugopal, Ramanujan, S. Jayachandran Nair, Editor of Samakalika Malayalam Weekly, P. Ravikumar, Literary Editor of Kalakoumudi, V.D. Selvaraj, Deputy Editor of Kalakoumidi, and Subhash Chandran, Novelist and Editor of Matrubhumi Weekly. Their support inspired him to explore and write extensively on music and art.
Inspired by his renowned teachers, including Vageeswari amma, Kalleli Raghavan Pillai, K.K. Kamalasanan, Gopinathan, Krishna Pillai, Akshay Kumar, P.V. Vijayan, Aravindakshan, and Shanmukhan Pulappatta, Madhu embarked on his creative writing journey. While at CUSAT, he edited and published ‘Ayanam’, a cultural magazine celebrated for its insightful political and cultural commentary. He also served as Secretary of the Literary and Debate Club of the Students' Union, further demonstrating his commitment to fostering intellectual and cultural discourse.
